What iPhone Do I Have? How to Find out Which iPhone Model You Are Using

It’s been over 15 years since Steve Jobs unveiled the first

iPhone on 9 January 2007. From unveiling a compact
smartphone with a 3.5-inch screen to a robust device with
a huge 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display, the evolution of the iPhone is as fascinating as it can ever get. For those who keep track of every iPhone event or pay close attention to each new iPhone launch, it’s easy for them to identify an iPhone model. But what about newbies who have just switched sides and aren’t aware of the developments in the Apple ecosystem? Or someone who can’t tell the iPhone 11 apart from the iPhone 12? Well then, you can come to the right place. If you are wondering – what iPhone do I have? How do I check my iPhone model name and number? Worry not, as we have explained three easy ways to find out which iPhone model you are using.
iPhone Model I’m Using: Three Methods Explained (2022)
So far, Apple has launched as many as 33 different iPhone models. Initially, the Cupertino giant would launch one iPhone in a year. To fend off the cut-throat competition, the company started launching multiple iPhones from 2013 onwards. And for the past two years, it has been launching four iPhones each year. Thankfully, there are multiple ways to find out the model name and number of an iPhone, so let’s check out the three easiest methods.
Table of Contents
Find out Which iPhone You’re Using from the List of Devices Under Apple ID
The easiest way to know the iPhone model you own is by checking the list of linked devices under your Apple ID profile. This is essentially a two-step method and gives you all the information you need about your iPhone. Let’s learn how to about it:
• Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on your Apple ID profile at the top.

• Now, scroll down and wait a few seconds for the connected devices list to populate. Once the devices show up, you can see the name of your iPhone as “This [iPhone model name]” at the top of the list. Then, you can tap on a specific device name to find more information. It opens the “Device Info” page and displays the serial number, IMEI, and other details.
Check Your iPhone Model Name Using the About Settings Page (iOS 12.2 or Later)
Your iOS device features a neat About page that shows all the essential information, including the software version, storage capacity, model name, and model number. So, you can use this method to easily figure out which iPhone you have.
Note: This method requires the iPhone to be running iOS 12.2 or later, as Apple started displaying the “Model Name” under the “About” settings page with this update. That means if you have an iPhone 5S or later, you can check the model name right from the Settings app.
• Open the Settings app on your iPhone and navigate to General -> About.

• On the “About” settings page, you will see all the important information about your iPhone. You will see both the model name and model number under the software version. Then, tap the “Model Number” entry once to see it change and display the actual iPhone model number starting with an A.
Check Your iPhone Model using the About Settings Page (iOS 12.1 or Earlier)
If your iPhone is running iOS 12.1 or an earlier software version, you will see only the iPhone model number on the “About” page. The rest of the steps remain the same as the section above. But, you will have to rely on the model number table (attached below) to find out which iPhone you have. Follow the steps to learn how to do that:
• Open the Settings app on your iPhone and head to General -> About.
• Now, tap once on the “Model Number” entry, which typically starts with an “M” or “N”.
• Next, you will see the numbers next to the entry change and begin with an “A”. This second number, beginning with an “A”, is the model number of your iPhone. For example, the model number of my iPhone X is A1865.
• Once you have the model number of your iPhone, check the table below to match the model number and find out which iPhone you own.
How to Know iPhone Model Number Without Turning It On (iPhone 8 and Later)
On iPhone 8 and later, the model number is etched on the upper side of the SIM tray cavity. You can use a SIM ejector tool to remove the SIM tray and then look inside the SIM tray slot. You will need to look closely using a magnifying glass or the macro camera on your phone to see the iPhone model number. Check out the screenshot below.
Now again, once you know the model number of your device, use the table below to match the model number and find out which iPhone you own. This is the easiest method to know the iPhone you’re using without turning on your device. It could come in handy when you’ve broken your screen or can’t power up the device due to battery drainage issues. This way, you can learn the model number and order any replacement parts if you want.
Check the iPhone Model Number Printed on the Back (iPhone 7 or Earlier)
If you are using an older iPhone model, another quick way to find the model number is to flip the smartphone around. You can find the model number printed at the bottom of the back panel. “A” is the first character on all iPhone model numbers. So, make sure to compare the model number with the number that appears on the “About” settings page to make sure the two match up.

It’s worth pointing out that iPhone 8/ 8 Plus, iPhone X, and later models no longer have the model number printed on the back panel. So, you will have to rely on the SIM tray method described above to find the model number of your new iPhone.

Match the “A-Series” Model Number to Your iPhone

The “About” section makes it pretty straightforward to find out all the essential information about your newer-gen iPhone. But, in some cases, you will have to rely on the model number to figure out the model name of your iPhone. With that said, we hope one of these methods helped you easily find the model name or number of your device.
