U.S. Attack on Iran’s Kharg Island Skirts Riskiest Targets
The strikes spared energy infrastructure on the island, a hub for oil exports, avoiding a potential trigger for retaliation against oil-and-gas sites in the region.
President Trump said on social media that the U.S. “obliterated every MILITARY target” on Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export terminal. The operation was meant to pressure Iran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway that has been largely blocked for oil exports except Iran’s own.
Iran warned of an escalation in the conflict, saying that if its energy assets are hit, the energy infrastructure of those who cooperate with the U.S. “will be immediately destroyed.”
Earlier, Trump said the U.S. Navy would start escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz “very soon.” The Pentagon is moving a Marine expeditionary unit and more warships to the Middle East.
